How your doors are made

Every door is made to order on 18mm moisture-resistant MDF (ENF grade) by our partner factory in Nanjing, China, then shipped door to door to Melbourne. It takes about 6–8 weeks. You approve a drawing before anything is cut, and you see photos of your doors before they ship.

We would rather say this plainly than put "made in Melbourne" on the page. Local 2-pac shops do good work, and they charge for it. Making the doors overseas is how we can price a painted shaker door from $229. What we do here is the part that goes wrong if nobody checks it: sizes, hinge and handle positions, the order itself, and sorting it out if a door turns up damaged.

The board

Core18mm moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF)
FormaldehydeENF grade under China's GB/T 39600, a stricter limit than Australian E0. The board's test report comes with your quote
Why not particleboard or OSBMDF gives a smooth face for routed profiles and paint, holds its shape, and is what Australian kitchen doors are normally made from

The two finishes

PET, from $199

A PET door is a flat 18mm moisture-resistant MDF board with PET film laminated to the face, edged on all four sides. PET is harder-wearing than vinyl and does not yellow, and the super matt colours are anti-fingerprint.

Painted, from $229

Painted doors are routed from 18mm moisture-resistant MDF and sprayed on all six faces, front, back and every edge, so there is no edge tape to lift. This is the same kind of finish Australians call 2-pac. Ours is a water-based paint in matt, which resists yellowing.

We don't currently make melamine or vinyl wrap (thermoformed) doors.

From order to your door

  1. You send sizes. Width × height of each old door in mm, hinge side, and the hinge cup and handle hole positions. A photo of the old door helps.
  2. We check and quote. We check every size against the drilling, then email a line-by-line price and a drawing of the door profile for you to approve.
  3. Deposit. 50% starts the order. Nothing is made until you have approved the sizes and the drawing.
  4. The factory makes your doors. PET doors take about 1–2 weeks to make, painted doors about 4 weeks because the paint has to cure between coats.
  5. Photos before shipping. The factory sends photos and video of your finished doors. We check them against your order before they are packed.
  6. Shipped to your door. Doors are crated and shipped door to door, customs and import charges included. Air freight is about 1–2 weeks, sea freight about 4.
  7. You check them. Open the crate when it arrives and check every door. Tell us within 7 days about any damage.

Questions people ask

Where are your cabinet doors made?

At our partner factory in Nanjing, China, which makes painted and PET cabinet doors for export. Every door is made to order to your sizes and shipped door to door to Melbourne. We handle the order, check your sizes and drilling, and deal with anything that goes wrong.

What board are the doors made from?

All doors are 18mm moisture-resistant MDF rated ENF, the top formaldehyde class under China's GB/T 39600 standard, which is a stricter limit than Australian E0. We send the test report for the board with your quote.

What happens if a door arrives damaged?

Send us photos within 7 days. A damaged door is remade free and, for small orders, sent by air, usually within 2–3 weeks. If we made a door to the wrong size, it is remade free including freight.

What if I measured a door wrong?

We remake it at half the door price, plus freight. That is why we check every size and send a drawing before anything is made.

Is there a warranty?

Painted doors have a 3-year warranty on the paint finish. On both PET and painted doors, manufacturing defects such as the face lifting or edges peeling are replaced free.
