Price and cost

How much does it cost to replace kitchen cabinet doors in Australia?

A made-to-measure door costs from $59 in melamine, $99 in thermoformed vinyl, $129 in PET and $179 in 2-pac, for a standard 450 × 720mm base door. A whole 20-piece kitchen is roughly $1,250 to $4,000 supply only depending on finish. Installed refacing by a kitchen company in Melbourne runs $2,000 to $6,000.

Can you replace just the doors on kitchen cabinets?

Yes. Doors and drawer fronts are separate parts screwed to the carcass with clip-on hinges, so any door can be replaced on its own. Measure the old door, order the same size with the same hinge positions, and swap the hinges across. This is the standard way to fix one damaged door or to reface a whole kitchen.

Is it cheaper to replace cabinet doors or paint them?

Painting is cheaper up front ($500 to $1,500 in materials for a DIY job) but does not fix lifted vinyl, chipped edges or swollen board, and brush-painted melamine chips easily. New doors cost from about $1,250 for a 20-piece kitchen in melamine and come with new edges and factory finish. A professional 2-pac respray of old doors ($3,000 to $7,000) usually costs more than new thermoformed doors.

How much does kitchen refacing cost in Melbourne?

Installed door-and-panel refacing in Melbourne is typically $2,000 to $6,000 according to 2026 cost guides. Supply-only doors for a typical two-bedroom unit kitchen (14 doors, 4 drawer fronts, 2 pantry doors) are about $1,250 in melamine, $2,200 in thermoformed vinyl and $3,800 in 2-pac from us; fitting is a day for a handyman or carpenter.

What is the cheapest kitchen cabinet door finish?

Melamine, from $59 a door. It is flat panel only. The cheapest way to get a shaker or other profiled door is thermoformed vinyl, from $99.

Is there a minimum order?

No. One door is fine, which is the point for repairs. The per-door price is the same whether you order one or forty; delivery is a flat charge per order in Melbourne.

How many doors are in an average kitchen?

A typical two-bedroom unit kitchen has 14 doors, 4 to 6 drawer fronts and 1 or 2 pantry doors, about 20 pieces. A family kitchen with an island is 25 to 35 pieces. Count every hinged door and every drawer face, then add end panels if you want them to match.

Measuring and hinges

How do I measure a cabinet door for replacement?

Take the door off and measure the door itself in millimetres, width first then height. Do not measure the cabinet opening. Then measure from the top and bottom edges of the door to the centre of each hinge cup, and note which side the hinges are on. Those four numbers plus the hinge side are everything we need.

What size door do I need for a 600mm kitchen cabinet?

For a full-overlay door on a standard 600mm wide, 720mm high base cabinet, the door is 596 × 716mm (2mm clearance on each side). If the 600mm cabinet has two doors, each is 296 × 716mm with a 4mm centre gap. Half-overlay doors on shared panels are 9mm narrower per shared side. Use our door size calculator for other cabinet sizes.

How many hinges does a kitchen cabinet door need?

Two hinges up to 900mm high, three from 900 to 1500mm, four from 1500 to 2000mm and five above 2000mm. Add one hinge for doors over 600mm wide or heavy finishes like 2-pac and PET on tall doors. The usual rule is a hinge every 400 to 500mm of door height.

Where are the hinge holes drilled on a cabinet door?

The 35mm hinge cup is usually centred 100mm from the top and bottom edges of the door (anywhere from 70 to 120mm is normal) and bored 21.5mm from the door edge to the cup centre, which gives a 4mm drilling distance for 18mm doors. Extra hinges go evenly between the two end hinges. Measure your old door and we drill to match.

Will new doors fit my existing hinges?

Yes if the new door is drilled at the same positions. Almost all Australian kitchens since the 1990s use 35mm cup concealed hinges (Blum, Hettich, Grass, IKEA and Kaboodle all use the same cup), so the old hinges unclip from the old door and screw straight into the new one.

What is the standard height of kitchen cabinet doors in Australia?

Base cabinet doors are typically 715 to 720mm high for a 720mm carcass. Overhead doors are 600, 720 or 900mm. Pantry and tall doors run 1,200 to 2,000mm. Widths follow the cabinet: 296, 396, 446, 496 and 596mm for 300 to 600mm cabinets with full overlay.

IKEA, Kaboodle and existing kitchens

Can I replace IKEA METOD doors with custom doors?

Yes. METOD doors use standard 35mm cup hinges and standard sizes (for example 400 × 800mm and 600 × 800mm), so a made-to-measure door in the same size drops onto the existing cabinet and hinges. This is the usual route when an IKEA colour is discontinued or you want a profile IKEA does not make.

Can I replace Kaboodle doors with a different colour or style?

Yes. Kaboodle (Bunnings) cabinets take any door of the same size with 35mm cup hinges. Common Kaboodle door sizes are 400 × 715, 450 × 715 and 600 × 715mm. If your Kaboodle colour has been discontinued, order the same size made to measure.

Can I put shaker doors on my existing flat-pack kitchen?

Yes. Shaker doors are routed from a single board and are the same thickness (18mm) as flat doors, so they use the same hinges and sit the same way on the cabinet. They are made in thermoformed vinyl, PET or 2-pac, not plain melamine.

Can you colour match a replacement door to my existing kitchen?

Usually for flat melamine doors made in the last 10 to 15 years, because Polytec, Laminex and Formica keep most colours in production. Send a photo and the colour name if you know it. For vinyl wrap and painted doors an exact match to an older kitchen is unlikely, so most people replace all the doors on that run.

What is the difference between thermoformed and 2-pac doors?

Thermoformed doors are MDF wrapped in a heat-pressed vinyl skin; they are seamless, cheaper (from $99) and come in fixed colour ranges, but the vinyl can lift near an unshielded oven and cannot be repaired. 2-pac doors are MDF sprayed with polyurethane paint; any colour, any profile, repairable, but about 60% dearer (from $179) and slower to make.

Are vinyl wrap (thermoformed) kitchen doors any good?

For most kitchens, yes. They are the standard profiled door in Australian flat-pack and builder kitchens and last 10 to 15 years. The known failure is heat: the vinyl lifts on the door next to an oven or above a kettle. Fit a heat strip on the cabinet beside the oven and keep the kettle away from overhead doors.

What is a PET door?

A PET door has a thick polyester (PET) or acrylic face laminated onto MDF with matching edging. It is the most scratch-resistant finish and is how most "super matt" anti-fingerprint doors are made. Flat panel only; from $129 a door.

Are the doors moisture resistant?

Melamine doors are made on moisture-resistant (MR) particleboard. Thermoformed, PET and 2-pac doors are made on MR MDF. None of them like standing water, so wipe the bottom edge of the sink door and keep the dishwasher seal in good order.

Ordering and delivery

How long do replacement cabinet doors take?

About 10–15 business days for melamine, thermoformed and PET doors, plus delivery. 2-pac doors take longer because of paint curing. We confirm the date on the quote before you pay.

Do you deliver cabinet doors across Melbourne?

Yes, across metropolitan Melbourne including Taylors Hill, Caroline Springs, Point Cook, Werribee, Sunshine, Footscray. Regional Victoria is quoted by postcode.

Do you install the doors?

Doors are sold supply only and arrive drilled for your hinges, which makes fitting a screwdriver job. For whole-kitchen refacing in Melbourne we can arrange a measure and fit through the renovation team we work with; ask for a fitted price with your quote.

Do the doors come with hinges and handles?

Not by default, because most people reuse their existing hinges. Soft-close 35mm cup hinges can be added at about $4 to $6 each. Handles are not supplied; we leave handle holes undrilled unless you give us positions.

Is there a minimum order?

No. One door is fine, which is the point for repairs. The per-door price is the same whether you order one or forty; delivery is a flat charge per order in Melbourne.

What is the smallest and largest door you can make?

From 100 × 100mm up to 1,200mm wide and 2,400mm high. Doors over 600mm wide or 2,000mm high need extra hinges and we will say so on the quote.

What is kitchen refacing?

Refacing means keeping the existing cabinet carcasses and replacing every door, drawer front and visible end panel, usually with new handles. It changes the look of the kitchen without plumbing, electrical work, a skip bin or weeks without a kitchen, and costs $2,000 to $6,000 installed in Melbourne versus $35,000 and up for a new kitchen.

Is kitchen refacing worth it?

If the cabinets are square, the drawers run and you are happy with the layout, yes: it is a fraction of a new kitchen. It is not worth it if the carcasses have swollen from a leak, the drawers have collapsed, or you want to move the sink or add an island.

Should I replace the benchtop when I replace the doors?

If the top is the old 33mm post-formed laminate, usually yes: a straight run of laminate benchtop made to length is a few hundred dollars and is the single biggest change after the doors. Stone is several thousand and needs a template. We quote laminate tops with the fitted option; we do not sell benchtops online.
